Showboating over Gaza

Guardian, 28 August 2008

"Having thoroughly assessed the security risks, Israel granted the ships safe passage. The protestors came ashore with enough hot air to fill the 5,000 balloons they’d brought for the children of Gaza. They also delivered 200 hearing aids. Yet their silence regarding Hamas’s abuse of its own people, let alone Israeli civilians, has been deafening."

"Britain is our friend and ally in freedom"

Daily Telegraph, 18 July 2008

"Today, Britain and Israel once again face the difficult decisions that must be taken when defending democratic freedoms. We have both been the targets of terrorist violence; we both know what it is to mourn the loss of innocent life."

"Britain is a hotbed of anti-Israeli sentiment"

Daily Telegraph, 10 June 2008

"The concept of an academic boycott is a ludicrous oxymoron, undermining the democratic principles of free speech and free debate. Academics, who are supposedly society's guardians of knowledge, objectivity and informed debate, have seen their union held hostage by radical factions, armed with political agendas and personal interests."

Approximately 180 Palestinians associated with the Fatah movement, including 22 injured men, were allowed temporary entry into Israel on Saturday, 2 August 2008. They arrived at the security fence in the northern Gaza Strip, asking to enter Israel after being threatened by Hamas gunmen who were pursuing them.  The entry of the Palestinians was a humanitarian gesture coordinated with and authorised by the Israeli Government. The IDF allowed the Palestinians to enter Israel after they were disarmed.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak has been consulting with the Mahmoud Abbas Government and both sides have decided the men would be permitted to cross through Israeli territory to the Fatah-controlled West Bank.
